Course Descriptions: Regionals
Burned it down at the Quals and all that’s left is deciding which Regional site fits? Well, enjoy that feeling, choose wisely, and start preparing for June. Here’s a short run through the four disciplines at each Regional:
Baitcasting: Three casts at each of three targets made from three concentric circles. Two minutes to complete from any casting style. One will have an obstacle. We have added a small twist, but I’m not letting that cat out of the bag. Relax. It’s in your skill set.
Archery: All equipment is provided, but you can use your own release. Two shots at three 3-D targets for six shots total in less than two minutes. Expect quartering to, away, and facing. Diamond Ice Man bows and Red Head arrows.
Air Rifle: The game has completely changed: Five stations with dual targets (two competitors at a time) that randomly cycle through. All five will “pop up” twice for a total of 10 shots. Targets will “stand” for 10 seconds and distance will vary according to venue.
Skills: Think Endurance discipline on the TV show, but in a very condensed area. Four skills that average about 30 seconds to complete and will vary at each Regional site. Think along the lines of pitching a tent, starting a fire, Carolina or Texas rigging, or any skill that a Total Outdoorsman or -woman has on call if needed.

John are we gonna get any practice shots/casts before each event? If so how many
This is lautrey, can`t wait for June 6th. See ya in Grapevine. My brother was told that we will get two practices before scoring. This seems about right, but just incase I will be practicing until the 6th.
Air rifle and archery will have a few "warm-up" shots. Specifics will be in the rules.
We have quite a few rods and while your 2-3 away from the line you get to adjust the brake, pitch a little (not from the boat or into the water) while you are waiting.
Hey John if we are doing some type of endurance challenge and we have to start a fire do we bring our own kindling? I was also curious how will the fishing rigs be tested are you testing the knots? What type of tent will be used if thats the route toc goes?
I want it to take less than 30 seconds, so IF we do it, it will involve cotton balls only.
Tested by hand only on the knot question. (IF we rig)
I'm sure it would be a Red Head, obviously smaller size, with clips. (IF, again)
Mr. Davis,
Will the bows being provided have draw lengths out to 32"s or will all of us with gorilla arms have to adapt to shorter draw lengths?
No 32's. I will have a 30 with a d-loop.
John:
Are all the shots with the rifle going to be free hand shots? Are you using Gamo guns?
Will you furnish, or in other words, can I use hand sanitizer to wipe on the bow string before I shoot it? Given that other people may be use to a kisser button. Thanks in advance for your comments.
Jay,
Shootin style to be determined on site, so practice free hand, seated, prone, etc.
Yes, on Gamo. For now.
hctaplous,
uhhhh...yeah, sure.
can we expect the list for regional qualifiers to be posted soon?
Yeah I always carry a bottle of hand sanitizer around just in case of a break out ( swine flu, California wild fire, etc) can never be to sure. Remeber be safe
"And knowing is half the battle"
GB,
E-mail is coming very soon.
John,
What about leftys? Will we be able to shoot a left handed bow? That would be great!
Thanks,
Rafe
Yes, we will have lefties.
John are all the bows going to have d-loops and do you know the how many feet/yards we'll be shooting.
sweet! thanks!
Leo,
Yes on D loops. Venue constraints on yardage, but expext 10-30.
Still no word on qualifying info. is it the best 200 or are qualifying conditions going to be taken into account. Wind etc.
Hey all the results are posted on the qualifier page see the PDF attachment and do the math to see if you made the top 200.
Mr. Davis, I made the top 200 but have yet to get a email, name is Chip Krizan, email is klearwaterpool@yahoo.com. Pen at the desk didn't make a great mark, just curious and thank you for your time. Chip
Hey BK I feel your pain it was very windy where I was at also. The way I look at it is if I was on a Lake could I stop the wind or just cowboy up and push threw it!
bk last year at the finals was the weakend the hurricane came through the states we had rain and wind mud. I bet theres atleast 15 finalist that would like a muligan!
Is it the top 200 and you made it or is it the top 50 from each region. This does make a change in status of how you rank yourself correct?
Hey John I have a off the wall question are they going to be any video's or pictures from 08 reginals and finals posted on here?
Sorry my grammar is horrible and spelling etc.
hopefully everyone out who has been checking the site everyday made it to regionals...
I did score 132 in the wind. For some reason my name is not on the spreadsheet.
I was wondering if anyone from the Dania, FL BPS has been watching this site. If so does anyone want to travel as a group. I checked the pdf and there are 5 of us that made the cut. If so contact me : email --> goldbukl@bellsouth.net to talk about it.
Will we not be able to use our own archery equipment??? If so will thier be a diamond set up at 26' draw at 45lb....not the typical set up...
Thanks
John,
Will the range of the targets be known for the archery segment or will we guess at the target range?
THG,
I will have a 26 draw that is just over 30 lbs and a 27 at 50. No, it's not the typical set-up, but everyone will have to adjust. The most important shots of the day will be on the warm-up range. Make sure you get a good group and adjust your aimpoint from there.
CB,
I'm sure everyone will figure out distance before they ever shoot. Regional sites are all pretty compact.
Now the 2 bow size you have mentioned are those the only two or are there other draw lengths?
I have 12 bows, 26 to 30 draw(30.5 w/ D loop). 29, 50, and 60 lb. pull.
Will the bows have a peep sight, kisser button, or just bare string?
Peep. D-Loop. No kisser.
hey John me and dad was trying to figure out what top score might be in the archery that do you thank
sorry brain was dead on grammar .Hey John Dad and I where trying to figure out what the top score will be in the reginals? Any idea thanx
If I know John, expect the most extream hunting conditions in the archery event. John loves to toy with the competitors and he sure make it a challenge. He will toy with lighting, placement of targets on the 3D animals and wait till you see how he places the animals(can you say obstructions?
Can't wait to see what John's twisted mind has come up with this year!
JAB,
IF I remember correctly; the highest score last year on any Regional course was a 29 by Kevin Fowler in the celebrity event in Nashville, followed by your dad in Harrisburg. I vaguely remember someone in Fla doing a really good score, but I don't think it was last year.
It will vary with weather, but the high 20's is a very strong score.
Given that I can breath fire through my eyeballs, can I use them without penalty?
Ok so I have a couple of questions for anyone who know's the answers. 1) In the real hunting world the kill shot is thru the vital of the animal, but in this competition is it the target that we are shooting for? 2) Does anyone know what the weight of the lure is gonna be for the Bait casting section? I'm only asking because this is my first competition of this sort ever.
All replies are welcome.
Jimbo,
The main target will cover the vitals or at an angle through the vitals, depending on how the animal is facing. There is a 10 point high risk target that will be a spine shot on the bigger animals or maybe a brainer on varmits.
There will be several choices of lures that vary in weight.
Ok thanks John, I'll be sling carbon and flinging lures ASAP!
john,
archery; how big around are the high risk targets and the will be targets placed over the vitals on the 3-d targets? air rifle; are the stand up targets going to be like the previous years and for the endurance challenge what type of tent will we have to assemble?
LB,
1.5 inches on the high risk targets. The bigger target will be placed for a shot to the vitals.
Air rifle target system is brand new. It's custom, so unless you are willing to travel to Malvern, AR for a demo, there's no place to see it before Regionals.
I didn't say the was a tent in the Skills discipline. There may be a tent. There may be a corn feeder to fill. There may be a ladder stand to put together. There will be four skills that will average less than 30 seconds to finish. If conditions allow; one will be hunting related, one fishing, one camping/hiking, and one survival.
Hi Mr. Davis i will be traveling to nashville and my family will be joining me. do we need tickets for cma fest. i saw it was down by the river is this correct. also have you gotten the parking site info. Thanks for a great comp. Brian
kyhunter -
You don't need a ticket for the TOC portion of FanFest - but you'll need to buy tickets for any of the other activities. We're working on getting the parking info posted for Nashville on the Regional info page, but here it is:
Parking for contestants will be at LP Field (where the Titans play) in Lot R. We will have a shuttle that runs people from the parking lot to the competition site.
Yes, you will need tickets to CMA Music Festival. They are well worth it. Was my first time last year and I had such a good time that my family is coming up when the Regional is over.
Event site is on the river. I do not have parking info. Try info@totaloutdoorsmanchallenge.com and ask.
are there any videos of last years regionals or finals? i would like to see them. thanks
corn feeder? wow i come from the land of black tails and where baiting is agaisnt the law... i guess i will have to google that one...
Ok Ematee says No you don't need tix, then John Davis comes through and says yes you do. I am assuming that John meant you do if you want to enjoy the concert portion of the festival and they are not necessary for the area for us having to compete at RIGHT!
Mr Davis. I read the posts and I thought I saw it somewhere but can't find it. What kind of rest will be on the bows? Also while I am asking in case the endurance is knot tying are there any specifics we should know also will it be limited to standard knots (meaning those not used for fly fishing)???

LB,
Really doubt corn feeder, my way of saying be ready for anything. Think 30 seconds or less.
GB,
I meant the actual concerts. Some of the shadier crew members may try and charge you for entrance to the comp venue, but don't fall for it.
Diamond Black Ice and Marquis bows that come fitted with Timberline Accessory Package, which includes the Hostage Capture arrow rest.
Having a basic knowledge of fishing knots will be helpful at least at a couple of the Regionals. The Bimini Twist will NOT be required, but maybe an improved clinch knot.
john
so basic outdoor knowledge then cool deal. I was also wondering how registration was going to work because i am having trouble finding a flight that works with my work schedule. Is there a time standard(8am to 9am or 9am to 10am)?
Hey leobrown,
look on the event info tab and find the regional that your are going to and the times are posted there for you to find your answer. Good Luck!
CRAZY QUESTION ?WILL THERE BE SIGHTS ON THE BOWS ?
As for as archery goes, if we shoot a bow in practice and have groups low and left, are we able to move the pins? not sure how this event is with that because every one of us is going to be different as a shooter.
Darin,
Yes, there will be sights.
Shaf,
Glad someone brought this up. You cannot move the pins; there just isn't enough time to allow everyone to adjust the sights. And yes, the peep is going to fit everyone a little different. The most important shots of the day are on the practice range. You are going to have to shot a nice and tight group there to know where to aim on the competition course.
ok. i just hope that the equipment is somewhat sighted in. i dont feel to confident aiming 6" high and to the left at a target 20 yards away when i need to hit a 10. if thats the case then luck might be better than skill at the reginals.
this is the fun part right John Kentucky windage! Last year I had to aim off the target to hit the target it was tuff but not impossible. Remember take your time 20 seconds a arrow is a life time don't rush and you should do just fine. The best thing about the way this is set up it only strengthens your archery and survival.
I'll try and make sure it's somewhat sighted in.
Well being as i lost 3 arrows into the hay bales the day that i qualified, makes me appritiate someone else's eyes being the ones sighting the bows in. it wasn't even that i cant hit a broad sidde of a barn, it was the nerves getting to me. But as for now i haven't even thought about anything else since qualifying. Good Luck to All and I will see you in Grapevine.
good luck to every one of you competing in grapevine, i wont be making that event. i am headed to independence
