The New Skills Course
This will be the first time a competitor steps onto a TOC course and has to rely on his or her knowledge and skill without the benefit of weeks of practice. The past few years you could practice casting and shooting in the 10- to 30-yard range, knowing that was pretty much what you could expect to encounter at a Regional. Not this year. The addition of the “skills” discipline will require competitors to perform an unknown set of outdoor skills in the fastest time possible.
Competitors know that there will be four skills to perform—all will average around 30 seconds—and they will remain unknown until game day. If the venue allows, there will be one skill each related to hunting, fishing, survival, and camping or hiking. There won’t be a lot of room to run, so the emphasis is on skills, not endurance like in the TOC Finals.
Becoming competent in skills that span every aspect of the outdoors takes years and a strong desire to learn, and that’s the point of the competition. Total Outdoorsman means that you’re ready to set that snare or make that lay-out blind blend into the surroundings—with or without practice.

JD all this info is making me feel very akward! My heart is beeting like a drumb
LOOKING FORWARD TO THE EVENTS. I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE COMPETITIONS ARE BASED ON THE OUTDOOR SPORTSMAN.IF ALL THE THE INDIVIDUALS ARE TRUE SPORTSMEN AND LOVE THE OUTDOORS THEN WHY PRACTICE ? TRYING TO SCUTINIZE OR KNOW EVERY DETAIL OF EVERY EVENT TO GAIN AN ADVANTAGE TAKES ALL OF THE FUN OUT OF IT.YOU EITHER GOT IT OR YOU DONT.
Well it would take longer, but why not weigh each contestant give them a knife and a compass, and a destination a 100 miles away (through the wilderness). All the contestants that reach the finish line would be weighed again and the winner is the one who lost the least amount of weight.
FFF,
I like it! But forget the compass, give 'em a map to study for 10 minutes before drop-off.
The only problem is I get tired going a 100 miles in a truck. Lets throw in a pack llama and a mule and I'm in.
Fat Boy Regards,
John
I'm In! Except I need to loose weight so I would place last! I say forget the knife. Just a piece of rope, a matchbook, and some popsicle sticks and we will have to McGyver it!
D-A-N-G!
Great Job,John,in adding another twist for the Challengers!
Four secretive skills to perform-"all will average around 30-seconds?"
Well Challengers ... either you have the skills or you don't!
Someone who is perceptive, and well informed, mixed in with a little shrewdness ... may be the one with the savvy edge.
This is going to be exciting!
It will be a true present-day,Renaissance Man, who has the ability and technique with a degree of cleverness, who summons his mind and body, mastering the call of the challenge, hitting the mark, with enthusiasm, that will cross the finish line, in conquest and triumph!
May The Best Man Win! Good Luck To All!
