Bass Pro Shops and Field & Stream will once again have activities for the kids during the Qualifier stage of the Total Outdoorsman Challenge. The Total Outdoors-KIDS Challenge will be open at all Bass Pro Shops that are hosting Quals on April 9 and 10, 2011, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be prizes (while supplies last), games, and even a little outdoor skills instruction.
You sign up and get your card for all the TOC fun, and the little ones get their card to go through all the TOK fun. You shoot your bow while they watch, and they shoot their bow while you watch. You go home with a score high enough to advance, and they go home with a few prizes and maybe a new knot or two to try on the next fishing trip.
This deal can work out doubly good for ya, if you play the cards right.
“Hon, I’ll take the kids this afternoon, you just get some rest."
The kids have a good time at something that’s free, you get to shoot and cast, and the spouse thinks you might not be totally useless for an hour or two. That whole two birds, one stone thing you hear about.
Don’t like the score on Saturday? Just repeat on Sunday and improve your standing—both at home and in the rankings. Providing two, kid-free afternoons on the weekend at my house would earn at least one fishing pass in the weeks to come.
So let’s review: It's free, the kids are entertained, the Better Half is happy, and you get to shoot. It is what it is—a good deal for everyone.
