1,000 Shots
Before the crew ever makes it Grapevine for the first Regional, we will have shot the brand-spanking new Diamonds at least a hundred times. I know it sounds great—hanging out with couple of buds just flinging carbon over God’s green acre. And it is…for the first few days. But after that, you become convinced that your friends are in dire need of professional help and that shoulder impingements are punishment for the bad stuff you did in college.
Even a dirt clod could learn target placement with this amount of time at the range. I have written in previous blogs about how we try and utilize angles, lighting, and terrain changes, so let’s not cover those again. Breaking the target’s outline and staggering are two other techniques you can use in practice.
Find an open backdrop with a single tree and place your 3-D deer about 10 yards in front of it. Blend the vitals (angle it so the tree blocks any backdrop from the front leg to the kidney) into the tree and shoot from unknown distances. Watch your grouping to see if you pattern high or low.
Staggered targets can have the same effect. Angle a target to the right at 15 yards, another to the left at 25, and a third facing you at 30. Again, watch your grouping and see if staggering targets (distance and facing angle) cause you to pull.
While I’m never exactly sure how we will set up an archery course until we are at the venue, the one shot I’m sure you won’t see at a Regional is a dead-on broadside.

John:
Will all the bows have a wrist strap on them? What type of rest do they have? Poundage?
I was wondering if anyone from the Dania, FL BPS has been watching this site. If so does anyone want to travel as a group. I checked the pdf and there are 5 of us that made the cut. If so contact me : email --> goldbukl@bellsouth.net to talk about it.
hey john, are we still getting emails or phone calls confirming that we made it to regionals... and i was curious if we get to choose where we can compete at... another thing if there is only 200 qualifiers how will 100 compete at each regional...
hey john never mind that last question... i dont know what i was thinking...
LB,
Still getting e-mails and it will give directions on how to register. And yes, you get to choose what Regional. Don't kill me with 100 folks at Regionals, brother, I'm worried with 50.
Have the emails been sent? If not when will they be sent?
John,
I barely missed the cut.......can I show up in Grapevine and take a no-shows spot as a "regional wildcard"? I'd be glad to. Maybe like a write in........thoughts?
Thanks,
Rafe
john, thanks for everything... i am sorry that we have all been writing you and dieing to know whats going on but we are all just waiting to know... you are the only one keeping us grounded... we all know that you only know so much and it means a lot when you let us know...
Rafe, not my call, but I would think no as a write-in. But you could come hang out during the Regional. I like it when someone really enjoys the event.
LB,
If I were a competitor, I would be driving event staff wwwaaayyy crazier than y'all are me. We are all very happy to provide any info we can.
Jay,
I believe it's Whisker Bis., 50-60 pds, and don't know about the strap. Got them Monday, but I can't shoot them until Friday, so I haven't pulled them from the box.
Jay and John,
I think the Diamond Ice Man bow comes with a Hostage Pro ... unless they installed a Whisker Biscuit on these. I shot one at the Grapevine BPS and we talked about the differences between it the Marquis and the Black Ice. It is nice ... very nice. JD just make sure they're sigted in!! LOL
Can you compete at more than one regionl?
What is the model number of the air rifle so I can buy one to practice?
I second Cramers sighted in part John! And as far as the shooting 1000 times, how many beers are added into the equation? Cause knowing you guys, there aint enough beer in Arkansas for you guys to shoot that much!
John when will the list for each site be available for us to know whom we will be competing against? I fill out the entry form using my Iphone and I am not sure it went thru. I didn't get any confirmation from the form website. Any info would be greatly appriatited. Thanks for putting on such a GREAT COMPETITION!!
Rafe -
Unfortunately, you can't fill in if you didn't make the cut. The Regional competition is available only to those who scored 102 or better in the Qualifiers.
Just filled out form for Harrisburg Qualifier. Really looking forward to seeing you guys again. I second the not enough beer comment. Brian, thanks for the info. You going to Grapevine or are you going straight to Mo. Good luck either way.
Jay - If we had only made the top 3 last year ... talk about a perk. This year is going to be tough - real tough. Good luck in Harrisburg.
I know a total outdoorsman should know distance, but are rangefinders out of the question?
No range finders at Regionals.
Thank you very much!
