Air Rifle
Blend a prairie dog shoot and a “whack-a-mole” arcade game and you got the new air rifle course. The target system was made to imitate a varmint hunt with .22’s at the TOC Finals. For the Regionals, we have adapted the game to not only test a competitor’s accuracy, but their ability to be accurate under pressure.
A brief course description: Start with a loaded rifle, safety on, and pointed down range. Judge counts down and Target 1 pops-up and stands for 10 seconds. Shoot, reload, and wait for Target 2. Repeat for Targets 3-10.
I spent an afternoon with event staffer Ron McElroy (who treated me like a piece of rented equipment on the course), testing the system and we agreed that it’s a lot of fun if you can stay ahead of the targets. It will cause some to panic and is challenging enough to give scoring separation. Any slip will cause you to have to rush at least one shot, which is enough to lose at the Regional level.
From first hand experience, getting behind the targets is like going to buddy’s house and having to put up with his wife’s Chihuahua dog. It growls and makes you a little edgy at first, but you’re a guest so you don’t ear-pinch the thing. Then it starts nipping at your ankles, and you all but forget about everything else that is happening.
Eventually, the sound of those little devil paws on the hardwood cause sheer terror. You try to relax, but you know it’s only a matter of time until that thing is going to bite you somewhere that hurts. Buddy’s wife comes in, calls the demon “Sweetie”, and takes him into the other room. The panic is over, but you missed all of the gar fishing video you came over to watch.

John, I have never known you to be affraid of a little dog? Why did you let Ron whoop you like that? Come on now you are supposed to be "the man"! Next you are going to be tellin us how Scout beat you or some better yet how Brian always beats you in the baitcasting. Is the trap gun this year at the championship going to be a side by side?
OMM,
The blog is based on my wife's dog/demon/ankle nipper and Scout. Poor fella was turned inside out and won't come over anymore.
Ron was on fire...nothing I could do. Scary good.
Brian does beat me in baitcasting...on a daily basis.
Yes, to the side by side.
Hey there John- Can you disclose the type of air rifle we will be using and the type of load? This is my first time involved in the TOC nad look forward to many more but I have to admit I feel very lost in the whole process. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey John are we going to be able to shoot in any position or is their a certain shooting position we have to maintain?
John, In other words, we can assume the event will be akin to dueling with, and quickly dispatching, agitated & adrenalin-charged "Sod Poodles"??? -- 3" fast-moving targets at up to 20 yards??? I'll need to bring a crate of Chihuahuas to "Starbucks" so that I can visualize the mayhem this course will create! Good luck all, s/ Mike

It's the same Crosman air rifles that were used at most of the Qualifiers.

The judge will dtermine a shooting position on site.
Capt Mike,
It's not that fast; ten seconds is a long time when you load properly and get your shots off in a timely manner. But if you want to take some Chihuahuas to starbucks, I'm in.
A bunch of ankle nippers chasing the rest of the crew around all hopped up on a double caff., choco latte sounds like fun.
(On the record, all OTHER crew members have to get their morning brew at the Starbucks, and yes, I'm selling you guys out. I prefer a quick-and-go's day old man fuel, but hey we are a team)
Which model Crosman? Is it a break barrel, or the pump version with a pellet clip?
I still have had no response from Bass Pro or field and stream concerning my entry form. I scored 132, scores were verified by each person at each station and the entry was turned in. The Bass pro person won't return calls. The only thing I get from Field and Stream is a sorry we cant find the entry. If you could just find out who was taking the entries at the OKC store this could be solved. The thing that I cant stand the most is the lack of communication on the iussue.
Bk call or better yet drive to the bps you competed at and talk to the PR mngr,it is a pr project with bps. F&S has nothing to do with the judges or score takers that where slected at bps most time they are volunteers. F&S only recieve what is sent to them,F&S guys have alot to do and are busy as well. take that into concideration.
FFF,
I don't have one in my hands, but I believe it's the 760. Pump, no clip. The Gamos were causing the pellets to "splatter" everywhere, so with the close quaters at Regionals we had to change.
Sorry it took so long to answer; been a busy weekend shooting bows.
BK,
Will get back to you very soon. Not trying to avoid it, trying to solve it.
If it's a 760 pump no clip, how do you get the pellets into the little booger? I have tried and I can't get that thing in there without the clip.
Thanks,
DM
Hey BK,
I was in your boat, but they just mis-spelled my last name. I was about to get all Al Gore on 'em (I demand a recount;-).
But they found the error and all is well. Hopefully they figure out what happened to you.
Good luck,
DM
DM,
The air rifle may have the clip; I'm still waiting to get mine in...
hey john
is the air rifle course going to be a two competitors competing heads up agaisnt each other for the same targets?
Hey Leo,
No, there are two targets on each bank 8-10 inches apart. They don't fall when you hit them; they stand for the full 10 seconds, hit or not. You're not racing your fellow competitor, just going for accuracy.
John are we going to be timed on this event like the previous years?
Not on air rifle, but everything else, yes.
Do you mean no time on the air rifle except the 10 second deal? Also, any word on whether we will use the clip? Drop one pellet in there backwards and there goes three targets...
DM
The targets are going to be up the same amount for everyone (10 secs)...no need to time; it's going to be the same hundred seconds across the board.
From what I understand, the rifles come with clips. If they do, we will use clips. I will know for sure on Thursday.
I would rather use the Gamo's becuse the crew is much more familiar with them, but they would spatter pellets off the target and into the crowd. So we are using the lighter fps option.
If you are worried about splatter, then how many pumps are you suggesting per shot on the Crosman 760? 3, 4 ?
FFF,
Yes, probably 4, maybe 5.
john since grapevine there hasnt been blogs on the event i was curious about this event(clip, no clip, and pumps).
Leobrown - they are Crossman pellet guns with a clip. Pump style. Pace your self and don't get into too big of a hurry ... 10 seconds is plenty of time to pump - load - aim and shoot. They stop the clock at the end of the first five targets to change clips. Good luck at your regional.
